Dismantle furniture and bag the screws to each piece

Label every box with contents and destination room

Run down the fridge and freezer

Start eating the frozen food a week out

Drain the washing machine and fit the transit bolts

Pack a first-night bag: bedding, towels, chargers, kettle

Check the condition of floors, walls and fittings

Confirm water, electricity and gas are switched on

Book the internet transfer or install

Order at least a week ahead — installs get booked up

Change the locks or door codes

Take meter readings on day one

Photograph any existing damage before you unpack

Register with the local council or authority

Find the stopcock, fuse box and bin collection day

Update your driving licence and vehicle registration

Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
