First Day at a New Job Checklist

Confirm start time, location or login details, and dress code

Prepare required documents: ID, bank details, tax forms

Reread the offer letter and any onboarding materials you were sent

Plan your commute, or test your remote setup, the day before

Learn the names and roles of your manager and closest teammates first

Ask for a short one-on-one with your manager in the first week

Introduce yourself by what you'll be doing, not just your title

Ask your manager what success looks like in the first 30/60/90 days

This turns a vague "do well" into something you can actually check progress against

Get access set up for the tools, systems and documents you'll need

Learn the team's existing process before proposing a new one

Write down acronyms and jargon you don't recognise to look up later

Pick one small, visible task you can finish early

Ask questions early rather than guessing and redoing the work later

Redone work costs more time than the question would have

Avoid comparing everything out loud to how your last job did it

Keep a running list of what you learn each day
