Age is completed years, not the gap between two years
Someone born in 1990 is not automatically 36 in 2026. Until the birthday comes round they are still 35, because age counts the years you have finished, not the ones you have started. That one rule is behind almost every off-by-one on a form. The second date here is not fixed to today either — put in the day that matters, an exam, a policy start, a flight, and you get the age you will be on that day.
Months are not thirty days
Three months from 30 November is 28 February, which is 90 days. Three months from 30 April is 30 July, which is 91. Dividing days by 30 drifts by several days a year, so the months and days here are counted by walking the calendar one month at a time and measuring what is left over. Month ends behave the way a calendar does: 31 January plus one month lands on 28 February, not 3 March.
Born on 29 February
A leap-day birthday exists once every four years, so three years out of four the calendar has to pick a stand-in. The common-law tradition treats the day before the anniversary as the moment the year is completed, which puts the birthday on 28 February. A few places, New Zealand and Taiwan among them, use 1 March instead. This page counts 28 February and says so on the result, because the choice changes your age for exactly one day a year.

Frequently asked questions
QWhy does it say 35 when I was born in 1990 and it is 2026?
Because your birthday has not come round yet this year. Subtracting the years gives the age you will reach during the year, not the age you are now. Move the second date past your birthday and it becomes 36.
QHow old is someone born on 29 February in a common year?
They complete the year on 28 February under the rule used here and across most common-law jurisdictions, so from that day they count as one year older. New Zealand and Taiwan set the date at 1 March instead. Either way the disagreement lasts a single day.
QCan I work out my age on a future date?
Yes. The second field takes any date, past or future. Enter the day of the application, the exam or the renewal and you get the age that will be written on the form.
QDo the total days include leap days?
Yes. The day count is real calendar days between the two dates, so every 29 February you have lived through is in it. That is why the number is never simply years times 365.
