Water only carries the lye into the oils — it takes no part in saponification and leaves again while the bar cures. That makes the strength of the solution the number that matters: 2 : 1 is a 33% lye solution, 1.5 : 1 is 40%. Sixty-five grams of lye at 2 : 1 takes 130 g of water, and with 500 g of oil the batter comes to 695 g.
